Beaches Near Mumbai — Within 2–4 Hours
The nearest beach to Mumbai is Juhu Beach (12 km from the city centre) — culturally iconic for its chaat and evening crowds but heavily polluted and unsuitable for swimming. For actual beach quality within weekend reach: Alibaug Beach (96 km, 2 hrs by road or 1 hr by ferry from Gateway of India + 30 min auto, total ~1.5 hrs) — clean, calm Arabian Sea, good for swimming October–March. Kashid Beach (130 km, 2.5 hrs) — white sand, relatively clean, popular with families. Murud-Janjira (165 km, 3 hrs) — beach plus historic island sea fort (Janjira Fort), excellent Malvani seafood. Harihareshwar (200 km, 3.5 hrs) — temple town and secluded beach, minimal crowds. Best overnight: Tarkarli (430 km, 8 hrs or overnight Konkan Railway train to Kudal) — Maharashtra's best snorkelling.
Beach Near Delhi — The Closest is Far, But Worth It
There is no beach within 1,000 km of Delhi by road. The nearest option is the Bay of Bengal coast: Puri Beach, Odisha — 1,800 km by road (impractical), but 2 hours by flight to Bhubaneswar + 60 km to Puri. Puri Beach is the nearest beach to Delhi by total travel time (~3–4 hours door-to-door by flight + transfer). The beach is 35 km long, has a functioning surf zone, and the Jagannath Temple directly behind it makes for a unique cultural-coastal experience. Alternative: Mandarmani Beach, West Bengal — 180 km from Kolkata (or 30-minute flight to Kolkata + 3 hrs drive). Delhi travellers should budget 1 day for travel in either direction.
Beach Near Bangalore (Bengaluru) — Goa and Karnataka Coast
Bangalore is 560 km from Goa's beaches (9–10 hrs by road, or 1.5 hr flight) and 400 km from Mangalore/Udupi (7–8 hrs by road, or 1 hr flight). Nearest usable beach: Murudeshwar Beach (490 km, 8 hrs) — tall Shiva statue, temple on rocky promontory, reasonable beach. For a weekend trip: Gokarna (490 km, 8.5 hrs) — Om Beach and Kudle Beach — absolutely worth the 8-hour overnight bus from Bangalore (buses from Majestic Bus Stand, ₹600–900 by Sleeper). By flight to Goa (~1.5 hrs + 1–2 hr cab to beach): Palolem or Agonda beaches are the quality choice.
Beach Near Hyderabad — Andhra Pradesh Coast
Hyderabad is 600 km from the Bay of Bengal coast. Nearest beach: Suryalanka Beach (Bapatla, Guntur district) — 280 km, 5 hours by road. Water quality is reasonable. Better option 340 km away (6 hrs): Rushikonda Beach, Visakhapatnam — India's best urban beach, lifeguard-supervised, clean, and served by direct flights from Hyderabad (55 minutes). A Hyderabad–Vizag weekend flight costs ₹2,500–5,000 return and gets you to the beach within 2.5 hours total. Combine with Araku Valley and Borra Caves for a complete Andhra coastal trip.
Beach Near Chennai — 30 Minutes to Marina
Chennai residents have the unique advantage of India's most dramatic urban beach at their doorstep. Marina Beach (4 km from Chennai city centre) is the world's second-longest urban beach (13 km). Sunrise walks and evening crowds are the experience — swimming is very unsafe due to strong rip currents. For swimming: Covelong Beach / Fisherman's Cove (44 km south, 1 hr) — calm, clean, good surf school. Mahabalipuram (60 km south, 1.5 hrs) — Shore Temple beach, UNESCO heritage site, decent swimming. ECR (East Coast Road) runs 160 km south to Pondicherry with multiple beach stops.
Beach Near Kolkata — Digha, Mandarmani & Bakkhali
Kolkata has several beaches within 3–4 hours by road. Digha Beach (187 km, 3.5 hrs) is the nearest significant beach — wide, flat, warm Bay of Bengal waters. Mandarmani (180 km, 3 hrs) is slightly quieter with a hard sand beach where cars can drive. Bakkhali (130 km, 2.5 hrs from Kolkata via Namkhana ferry) is the most scenic with forest backing and fewer crowds. All three are excellent for a Kolkata weekend escape October–February. For a premium coastal experience from Kolkata, fly to Bhubaneswar (1 hr) and visit Puri or the Chilika Lake coast.
