Old Digha vs New Digha — Which Side to Stay
Old Digha is the original fishing village turned beach town — narrower beach, more atmospheric, local-feel restaurants, and the main fish market. New Digha (developed from 1980s onward by West Bengal Tourism) has wider, cleaner sands, the WBTDC resort complex, a Marine Aquarium, and better hotel options. Most visitors base themselves in New Digha and walk to Old Digha (2 km) for atmosphere and fresh seafood.
Sankarpur (14 km north) and Talsari (18 km, just across the Odisha border) offer significantly less crowded, cleaner beaches with casuarina groves — good alternatives for those willing to hire a vehicle.
🌊Visit Digha in January for winter sun, calm seas, and a fraction of the summer/holiday crowds.
🐚The morning fish auction at Old Digha market (5–7am) is a fascinating cultural experience — freshly landed pomfret, prawn, and hilsa sold in rapid Bengali bidding.
🪸Hire a cycle rickshaw for Old Digha to New Digha beachfront journey (₹50) — far more enjoyable than walking the road.
Beaches Around Digha — Day Trips Worth Taking
Mandarmani (45 km north) offers the longest motorable beach in India (13 km), extremely calm water, and a more upmarket resort strip — popular with Kolkata's young professionals. Shankarpur (14 km) and Petuaghat have some of the least-crowded Bengal beaches. Jhargram and Bishnupur are reachable on longer road trips for those combining a cultural itinerary with the beach.
