India's most famous beaches get crowded β but its hidden gems remain untouched. We've tracked down 20 beaches so secret that some don't even appear on Google Maps. From a forest beach only reachable by boat in Goa to a glowing bioluminescent lagoon in Kerala, these are the beaches that reward the curious traveller.
Butterfly Beach, Goa β Only Reachable by Boat
Butterfly Beach near Palolem in South Goa is shaped exactly like a butterfly's wings when seen from above β a revelation only visible from the sea (which is how you'll get there). Hire a fishing boat from Palolem for βΉ500ββΉ800 return. The beach has zero infrastructure β no shacks, no hawkers β just white sand, clear water, and dolphins that frequently surface nearby. Go in the morning for the calmest waters.
Murdeshwar, Karnataka β Beach with a God
Murdeshwar on Karnataka's coast is dominated by the 20-storey Rajagopura (temple tower) and an enormous Shiva statue β making it perhaps the most visually dramatic beach in India. Yet very few Goa-bound tourists divert here. The beach itself is clean with black volcanic rocks and a good swimming area. The Murdeshwar temple is free to enter and the rajagopura elevator (βΉ10) gives panoramic coastal views. Nearest airport: Mangalore (160 km).
Chandrabhaga Beach, Odisha β Moon Beach
Named after its crescent (chandra = moon) shape, Chandrabhaga near Konark is one of Odisha's most beautiful and least visited beaches. The Sun Temple at Konark is 3 km away, meaning you get world-heritage culture AND a pristine beach in one trip. The annual Chandrabhaga Mela (February) draws cultural pilgrims but the beach is otherwise empty. No commercial development β just pure coast.
Yarada Beach, Andhra Pradesh β Military-Protected Pristine
Yarada near Visakhapatnam is surrounded by defence land, which means access is restricted and the beach is extraordinarily clean and uncrowded. A day pass can be arranged through the cantonment office. The beach is tucked behind forested hills and the water is deep blue and clear. On clear days you can see dolphins from the shore. Definitely worth the admin effort to visit.
