Agni Theertham Beach
Agni Theertham is the beach directly adjacent to the Ramanathaswamy Temple β the very spot where Lord Rama is believed to have prayed to Lord Shiva. Every morning at dawn, hundreds of pilgrims take a ritual dip in the Bay of Bengal before proceeding to the 22 holy wells (theerthams) inside the temple complex. The beach itself is a wide, clean stretch of golden sand with gentle waves β safe for wading and swimming.
For non-pilgrims, Agni Theertham at sunrise is one of India's most moving coastal experiences. The Gopuram (temple tower) rises directly behind the beach, silhouetted against a sky that transitions from deep purple to saffron in minutes. Fishing boats launch from the sand at 5:30am, their multi-coloured hulls catching the first light.
The beach is free to visit and accessible 24 hours, though the spiritual atmosphere is strongest between 5:30am and 8:00am. Modest clothing is expected as this is a pilgrimage beach.
Dhanushkodi Ghost Town
Dhanushkodi, 20 km southeast of Rameswaram town, is one of India's most hauntingly beautiful destinations. A thriving town until 1964, it was completely destroyed by a massive cyclone that killed over 1,800 people. Today, the skeletal ruins of the old railway station, post office, and church stand half-buried in sand with the Bay of Bengal on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other β the exact confluence point where the two waters visibly meet in different shades of blue.
The road to Dhanushkodi is itself a remarkable experience β a narrow causeway through shallow turquoise waters and salt marshes where migratory birds gather. From the tip of Dhanushkodi, on exceptionally clear days, you can see the ghostly chain of sandbars and shallow reefs stretching toward Sri Lanka β this is Adam's Bridge (Ram Setu), the legendary bridge built by Lord Rama's army. Whether or not you believe the mythology, the geological formation is genuinely spectacular.
Pamban Bridge Crossing
The Pamban Bridge (built 1914, rebuilt 2024) is India's first sea bridge and one of the most photographed rail crossings in the country. The 2.3 km cantilever bridge connects Rameswaram Island to the Tamil Nadu mainland, its steel girders rising above the Palk Strait with the blue of the Bay of Bengal stretching endlessly on both sides. The road bridge runs parallel and offers equally spectacular views.
Watching a train cross the Pamban Bridge from the nearby Pamban village observation point is a bucket-list experience. The bridge has a lifting section that opens to allow ships to pass through β watching this mechanism operate is a rare treat. The new bridge (opened 2024) is a vertical-lift design, far safer than the original cantilever.

Why Rameswaram Beach is a Must-Visit
Rameswaram stands at the tip of a teardrop island where the Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean merge. One of Hinduism's holiest pilgrimages, its Agni Theertham beach is where devotees take the sacred dip β and the view of Adam's Bridge (Ram Setu) at the horizon is breathtaking.
