Marina BeachTamil Nadu — Beach Guide 2026

Marina Beach is the world's second-longest urban beach — a staggering 13 kilometres of grey-golden sand stretching from Fort St. George in the north to Besant Nagar in the south, bordered by the Bay of Bengal. Unlike India's more scenic resort beaches, Marina is a living, breathing public space — Chennai's urban lung, social gathering place, and cultural landmark all in one. It is best experienced as a sensory immersion: chai vendors, kite-sellers, sculpture parks, political murals, and the ever-present sound of the Bay of Bengal slapping the shore.

Editor's Note

Marina Beach is best experienced at sunrise — the colours, the early morning joggers, filter coffee vendors, and the sense of scale only reveal themselves in the first two hours of daylight.

What to See & Do at Marina Beach

The Marina Beach promenade is especially magnificent at sunrise — vendors set up filter coffee and sundal (spiced chickpea snack) carts by 5:30am, joining the hundreds of joggers and morning walkers who use the beach as Chennai's public gym. The seawater at Marina is not recommended for swimming — dangerous rip currents and heavy boat traffic in the northern section make wading risky — but the sheer scale of the beach makes walking it an unmissable Chennai experience.

The beach is dotted with significant public statues — Mahatma Gandhi, former CM MGR and Jayalalithaa, Swami Vivekananda — each surrounded by a distinct local culture of admirers and tourists. The Aquarium at the northern end is one of Chennai's oldest public institutions and worth an hour for marine biology enthusiasts.

💡
Pro Tips
🌊Visit between 5:30am–8am for sunrise and morning cool — Chennai afternoons on the beach are brutally hot.
🐚Eat at the beach stalls only, not tourist restaurants on the promenade which are significantly overpriced.
🪸Parking along Kamarajar Salai (the main promenade road) is free but fills fast on weekends.

Best Food at Marina Beach

Marina Beach's food scene is legendary among Chennaites. The beach stalls (200+ operators) serve a dizzying array of Tamil Nadu street food: sundal (spiced chickpead with coconut, ₹20), roasted corn, bhel puri, fresh coconut, mango slices with chilli-salt, and the iconic murukku (crispy rice flour spiral) paired with bajji fritters. Filter coffee served in traditional dabara-tumbler sets (₹15) by roaming vendors is a quintessential Chennai beach experience.
