The Anjuna Wednesday Flea Market — India's Most Famous Beach Market
The Anjuna Flea Market runs every Wednesday from 8am to sunset, October through April. What started as a small hippie goods market in the 1980s has evolved into one of India's most vibrant outdoor markets — 500+ stalls spread across the beach periphery selling Rajasthani silver jewellery, Kashmiri papier-mâché, Tibetan thangkas, hand-block-printed fabric, leather goods, vintage psychedelic posters, and fresh spices. The prices are negotiable — haggling is not just accepted but expected.
The food section of the market is a multicultural feast: Tibetan momos, Lebanese falafel, Goan fish thali, wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, and fresh sugarcane juice all available side by side. Arrive before 10am for the best selection before organised coach tours arrive from South Goa and Panaji.
The Wednesday market operates in the main beach parking area and extends north along the beach path. By 3pm it transitions from shopping to socialising — live music sets up near the beachside bars and the sunset hour becomes Anjuna's most animated time of week.
Anjuna Beach & Rock Pools — What Nobody Tells You
At low tide, Anjuna's rocky volcanic coastline (completely unlike the soft sand of Baga and Calangute) reveals an extraordinary landscape of tidal pools filled with sea anemones, starfish, hermit crabs, and small reef fish. The rocks at the north and south ends of the beach create natural swimming pools during low tide — calm, shallow, and warm. This is where Anjuna locals actually swim, far from the tourist zone.
The beach itself is 1.5 km of mixed sand-and-rock, backed by palms and the terraces of Portuguese-era holiday villas. The famous Curlies Beach Shack at the south end has been running since the 1980s and is one of the most storied bars in Goa — outdoor seating on a rocky promontory with views across the Arabian Sea.
Chapora Fort & Vagator — The Anjuna Day Extension
Chapora Fort (3 km north of Anjuna) became internationally famous when "Dil Chahta Hai" (2001) featured its dramatic red basalt walls in the iconic friend-group scene. The fort sits on a rocky headland 150 metres above sea level, offering the best panoramic view of the Chapora River estuary, the Arabian Sea, and the entirety of North Goa's coastline from Baga to Arambol. Entry is free, the walk from Vagator takes 30 minutes, and sunset from the northern bastion is genuinely one of Goa's top 5 experiences.
Vagator Beach below the fort is divided into Big Vagator and Little Vagator (also called Ozran) — Little Vagator is the more scenic with a sheltered cove backed by red cliffs and accessible only by a steep path from the road above. The Saturday Silent Noise (now at Vagator's Hilltop venue) continues the area's legendary trance music tradition.
