Best Summer Beaches in India 2026 — Beaches Open in April, May & June

By Arjun Mehta · Updated March 20268 min read

India's beach season is widely associated with November–February, but summer (April–June) has its own rewards — fewer crowds, lower prices, spectacular pre-monsoon swells for surfers, and extraordinary morning light at beaches that peak destinations turn over-commercial in December. This guide covers every beach that's excellent or at least very good in April, May, and early June — and which ones to skip.

Best Beaches for Summer Travel: The Overview

India's beach seasons vary dramatically by coastline direction (Arabian Sea vs Bay of Bengal) and by monsoon arrival. The Southwest monsoon arrives first in Kerala and Karnataka (typically June 1–5), then Goa (June 5–10), then Maharashtra (June 10–15), and Tamil Nadu/Andhra Pradesh only in October–November. This means summer beach windows differ significantly: April–May is excellent almost everywhere. Early June: Karnataka, Goa, and Kerala coasts close as the monsoon arrives — but Andaman, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh coast remain accessible. June–September: Andaman beaches are rough, but Tamil Nadu's East Coast (Marina, Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry) sees its best weather.

Andaman Islands — Excellent Through May

The Andaman Islands are the single best summer beach destination in India for April and May. The Southwest monsoon reaches the Andamans in mid-May but in April and early May, the seas are still clear, the water temperature is 29–30°C, and the beaches are at their emptiest since the December–February peak. Radhanagar Beach, Elephant Beach, and Neil Island beaches are all excellent April–May. Water visibility for snorkelling and diving remains excellent through April (15–20 metres) before dropping as the monsoon approaches. May: still excellent in the first two weeks. Book accommodation early — April is increasingly popular as domestic travellers discover this window. Avoid Andaman from mid-May through September (rough seas, most boat services reduced or cancelled).

Gokarna, Karnataka — Best Pre-Monsoon Beach in India

Gokarna's Om Beach and Kudle Beach are arguably their best in April and early May. The pre-monsoon southwest swell begins arriving in April — creating consistent 2–4 metre waves ideal for surfing (Namaste Surf School operates here) — while the tourist crowds of November–February are gone. April–May at Gokarna: temperatures reach 32–34°C midday, but mornings (6–9 AM) and evenings (5–7 PM) are beautiful. The beach shacks and cafés are open, the accommodation is 30–40% cheaper than peak, and Om Beach's dramatic rocky headlands look spectacular in the harsh summer light. Gokarna's beaches close effectively June 5–10 when the Karnataka monsoon arrives abruptly. Use April for Gokarna; it is genuinely the best time.

Goa — April is Good, May Gets Hot, Avoid June

Goa in April is underrated — the peak crowds are gone (post-Easter), beaches are less congested, and prices fall 20–30%. Water temperature is 29–30°C, the sand is hot underfoot, but the sea is warm and swimmable. Beach shacks begin closing from mid-April onward (especially in North Goa) as the monsoon preparation begins, so availability of full-service shack dining is reduced. May Goa: very hot (35–37°C), many shacks closed, fewer tourists — possible but not ideal. The monsoon arrives June 5–10, ending beach season entirely. Best Goa summer strategy: visit the first two weeks of April, targeting South Goa (Palolem, Agonda, Patnem) which retains more atmosphere through April than North Goa.

Varkala & Kovalam, Kerala — Summer Yoga Season

Kerala's beaches have their most interesting cultural character in April–May — the yoga retreat season peaks in January–February, but serious yoga practitioners and Ayurveda-seekers who want an authentic (not-peak-touristy) experience favour March–May. Varkala Cliff Beach is pleasant in April (temperature 30–32°C, afternoon sea breeze makes it comfortable). The cliff cafés are open, the yoga studios run regular classes, and Ayurveda centres have availability. The Arabian Sea swell in April creates the best surfing conditions at Varkala in months. Kovalam: similarly pleasant — Lighthouse Beach manageable through April. Both beaches close effectively June 1–5 when the monsoon arrives. Lakshadweep: the absolute best Indian summer beach — accessible only by flight or luxury cruise, protected from monsoon until late May, and the most exclusive/quiet between March–May.

Tamil Nadu & Pondicherry — Best Summer Beaches on the East Coast

The East Coast (Bay of Bengal side) is a summer beach secret. Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry receive the Northeast monsoon (October–November), not the Southwest monsoon — meaning the summer months (April–September) are their driest, sunniest period. Pondicherry beaches, Mahabalipuram, and the ECR coastal stretch are all excellent April–June: the sea is warm (28–30°C), the waves are calm (Bay of Bengal in summer is typically gentle), and the tourist flow is light. Serenity Beach, Pondicherry is arguably at its least crowded and most surfable (Southeast swell season begins) in April–May. Marina Beach, Chennai: summer mornings are spectacular for photography — arrive at 5:30 AM for golden-hour light on an almost-empty 13-km beach. Mahabalipuram: April–June is excellent for exploring the Shore Temple and Five Rathas in the early morning before heat sets in (arrive at 7 AM, leave by 11 AM).

Best Time of Day at Summer Beaches in India

In summer (April–June), timing is everything. Indian summer beach temperatures (32–38°C) make a midday visit exhausting rather than enjoyable. The golden windows: dawn (5:30–8 AM) — cooler temperatures, exceptional light, minimal crowds, and the sea often glassier than later in the day. Every summer Indian beach is more enjoyable at dawn than at any other time. Late afternoon–sunset (4:30–7 PM) — temperatures drop, sea breeze picks up, light becomes photogenic. Many beaches come alive with local evening culture during this window. Pack reef-safe SPF 50+ sunscreen (summer UV index at Indian beaches is typically 11–12, "extreme"), a high-quality sarong for shade while resting, and electrolyte packets for hydration.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Which Indian beaches are best in summer (April–June)?
Andaman Islands (excellent through May), Gokarna Karnataka (October–April is peak, April is best uncrowded month), Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu coast (April–September are their driest months), and Varkala/Kovalam Kerala (April is good before the June monsoon arrives) are the best Indian beaches in summer.
Can you go to Goa in May?
Yes, but with reduced facilities. Goa in April is better than May — more beach shacks are still open, and conditions are similar. By May, temperatures reach 35–37°C and the monsoon arrives June 5–10. If visiting Goa in summer, target South Goa (Palolem, Agonda) which retains more activity through April–May.
What is the best beach in India in April?
Radhanagar Beach, Andaman is the best Indian beach in April — seas are still clear, water is warm (29–30°C), and crowds are far fewer than December–January peak. On mainland India, Gokarna (Karnataka) and Serenity Beach (Pondicherry) are the best April beach experiences.
Are Andaman beaches good in summer?
Andaman beaches are excellent in April and the first two weeks of May. The Southwest monsoon reaches the Andamans in mid-May, after which sea conditions deteriorate. Book accommodation for Andaman in April well in advance — it is an increasingly popular shoulder season for those who know.
