Famous Beaches in India 2026 — The 20 Most Iconic Coastal Destinations

Some Indian beaches are famous for their nightlife, some for their spiritual significance, some for record-breaking size, and some for sheer natural beauty. Here are the 20 most famous beaches in India — the ones that have earned global reputations and become defining symbols of India's coastal culture.

Baga Beach, Goa — India's Most Famous Party Beach

No beach in India is more famous for nightlife than Baga. Tito's Lane — India's most storied beach nightclub strip — has been operating since the 1970s, and Britto's restaurant (1965) is a Goa institution. Water sports operators line the shore from 9 AM: parasailing (Rs.800), jet skiing (Rs.700/15 min), and the famous banana boat rides. Despite its commercialisation, Baga remains the quintessential India beach experience. Best visited November–January for perfect weather and peak atmosphere.

Marina Beach, Chennai — World's 2nd Longest Urban Beach

Marina Beach in Chennai stretches 13 km along the Bay of Bengal, making it the world's second-longest natural urban beach and India's most visited beach by sheer footfall. Unlike Goa beaches, Marina has no swimming (rip currents), no beach shacks, and no commercialisation — it is a pure people's beach, packed with local families every evening from 5 PM. The Anna Memorial, MGR Memorial, and Valluvar Kottam stand on the beachfront. Best visited at sunrise for photography.

Radhanagar Beach, Andaman — Asia's Most Award-Winning

In terms of international awards and recognition, no Indian beach comes close to Radhanagar. Time magazine named it Asia's best beach. CNN Travel has featured it in top beach lists for a decade. The reason: 7 km of bone-white sand, 15-metre-visibility water, lush rainforest, zero commercial development, and one of the most dramatic sunsets on the planet.

Varkala Beach, Kerala — Most Dramatic Cliffside

Varkala's fame comes from its extraordinary natural drama — a 300-metre red laterite cliff running the length of the beach, topped with Ayurvedic spas, yoga studios, and cafes. The Janardhana Swamy Temple, one of Kerala's most ancient, stands at the cliff's northern edge. Paragliding off the cliff (November–February) is one of India's most memorable experiences.

Juhu Beach, Mumbai — Bollywood's Beach

Juhu Beach in Mumbai's western suburbs is the city's most famous beach — not for its beauty (the water is severely polluted and unsafe for swimming) but for its cultural significance. Bollywood celebrity bungalows line the street behind it. The beach is packed with food stalls selling Mumbai's famous bhel puri, pav bhaji, and fried corn every evening. Every November for Chhath Puja, 100,000+ devotees gather here in one of India's most spectacular religious beach gatherings.

Puri Beach, Odisha — India's Sacred Beach

Puri is India's most culturally layered beach. The Jagannath Temple (one of Hinduism's four dhams) stands 3 km from the beach, meaning this shoreline has been a pilgrimage destination for over 1,000 years. The beach itself is 8 km long, wide, and vibrant — fishing boats launch at dawn with colourful sails, sand artists like Sudarshan Pattnaik create world-record sculptures, and local horse rides are a tradition.
