The Legend and the Viewpoint
The Dona Paula viewpoint provides a magnificent panoramic view of the Mormugao Harbour and the Arabian Sea. A whitewashed statue named "Image of India" (often mistaken for Dona Paula herself) stands at the pinnacle. The myth states that Dona Paula, daughter of the Portuguese Viceroy, cast herself into the sea when refused permission to marry a local fisherman.
The area is also famous in Indian pop culture, having served as a shooting location for several Bollywood films, including the blockbuster "Singham".
Water Sports Bay
While the main bay isn't ideal for sandy beach lounging, the Dona Paula Sports Club operates excellent water sports. Because it is somewhat sheltered, you can enjoy windsurfing, kayaking, water-skiing, and parasailing here in waters that are often calmer than the open sea beaches.
