Olive Ridley Turtle Nesting — Morjim's Protected Heritage
Morjim is the most important Olive Ridley sea turtle nesting beach in Goa, with Forest Department rangers patrolling from November to March and relocating nests that are in high-tide risk zones to protected enclosures. The beach is closed to vehicles and all lighting is prohibited from dusk to dawn during nesting season — a significant restriction that has allowed the population to stabilise after years of decline.
For visitors, ethical turtle watching at Morjim can be arranged through Forest Department-approved guides at the Morjim ranger post (at the south end of the beach). The guided sessions run from 9pm and cost ₹300–500 per person; groups are limited to 8. This is one of the most moving wildlife experiences available in Goa, requiring patience but rewarding it abundantly.
Hatchling emergence (typically 50–60 days after laying) creates extraordinary dawn scenes — a nest may contain 100+ hatchlings that emerge simultaneously and make their coordinated run to the sea within minutes of each other. February and March are the peak emergence months.
Chapora River Estuary — Goa's Most Beautiful Waterway
The Chapora River mouth at Morjim creates a constantly-shifting tidal landscape — the sandbars change position with each season, kingfishers hunt along the mangrove-fringed banks, and the Chapora Fort (visible on the hilltop across the river in Vagator) provides a dramatic backdrop. At low tide, the estuary reveals extensive mudflats where dozens of wading bird species feed — making this the best birdwatching spot in North Goa.
Kayaking the Chapora estuary is Morjim's best adventure activity — rent kayaks from operators at the beach (₹400/hr) and paddle upstream into the mangrove channels, where spotted deer are occasionally visible on the banks and otters have been sighted. The tidal current assists paddling downstream, making a 2-hour loop effortless.
Why Morjim Beach is a Must-Visit
Morjim, known as "Little Russia" for its large Russian expat community, is a protected Olive Ridley turtle nesting site. The wide, shallow beach is backed by the Chapora River estuary.
