The Giant Shiva Statue
The Murudeshwar Shiva statue (built 2002, 123 feet / 37 metres tall) is the second-tallest Shiva statue in the world, sitting in the padmasana pose facing the sea on a rocky hilltop. The statue is visible from 10 km away along the coastal road, creating one of India's most recognisable silhouettes. The temple complex is free to enter.
The Rajagopura (temple entrance tower) rises 249 feet / 76 metres behind the statue β taking the elevator to the top (βΉ10) provides the best aerial view: the Shiva statue in the foreground, the Arabian Sea stretching to the horizon, and the Konkan coastline curving north toward Gokarna. On clear days, visibility extends 30+ km.
Netrani Island Scuba Diving
Netrani Island (also called Pigeon Island), 19 km offshore from Murudeshwar, is Karnataka's premier scuba diving destination and one of India's best overall dive sites. The heart-shaped rocky island drops to 40+ metres underwater, creating dramatic walls, overhangs, and coral formations. Marine life includes whale sharks (OctoberβMarch, seasonal), grey reef sharks, manta rays, barracuda shoals, and hundreds of species of tropical fish.
Day-trip dive packages from Murudeshwar cost βΉ3,500β5,000 for two dives including boat transfer (45 min each way). Operators like Dreamz Dive and West Coast Adventures run certified PADI courses. Discovery dives (no certification needed) start at βΉ4,000. Visibility: 12β25 metres depending on season.
Why Murudeshwar Beach is a Must-Visit
Murudeshwar is home to the world's second-tallest Lord Shiva statue β a 123-foot idol overlooking the Arabian Sea from a hilltop temple. The beach combines religious grandeur with excellent scuba diving and snorkelling alongside a shipwreck site, making it one of Karnataka's most unique coastal experiences.
