Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)Andaman & Nicobar Islands — Island Guide 2026

Neil Island — now officially renamed Shaheed Dweep — is the Andaman's most underrated gem. Small enough to cycle entirely in 90 minutes, this tiny island packs in three distinct beaches (Bharatpur, Laxmanpur, and Sitapur), a stunning natural rock bridge, some of the best accessible coral snorkelling in India, and an evening bioluminescence kayak experience that feels like magic. Unlike the more developed Havelock, Neil retains a genuine village pace.

Editor's Note

Neil Island is everything Havelock is not — quiet, walkable, and genuinely unhurried. Stay 2 nights minimum; the island reveals itself slowly.

Neil Island's Three Beaches — Which to Visit

Bharatpur Beach (north side, near jetty) is Neil's most popular snorkelling beach — shallow turquoise water over a live coral garden starting just 10 metres from shore. APTDC runs glass-bottom boat trips (₹300, 45 min) that hover over reef systems without any swimming required. Sitapur Beach (east) is the natural sunrise beach — remote, rocky, and utterly peaceful at 6am. Laxmanpur Beach (west) is a wide, calm sandy stretch ideal for swimming and sunset — the most photographed beach on the island.

💡
Pro Tips
🌊Bharatpur Beach snorkelling is best at low tide (check tide charts the night before).
🐚Rent a bicycle (₹100–150/day) from any jetty-area guesthouse — the whole island ring road is 8 km.
🪸Neil's bioluminescence kayaking (November–January) is organised by Pristine Beach Resort for ₹800/person — book the day before.

Natural Bridge — Neil Island's Iconic Landmark

The Natural Bridge at the western end of Laxmanpur Beach is a natural coral rock arch carved by the sea — accessible at low tide via a 15-minute walk along the rocky shore. The bridge is best photographed at golden hour; at high tide it's submerged. This is Neil Island's most iconic image — the arch framing the Indian Ocean behind is genuinely spectacular.

How to Reach Neil Island from Port Blair & Havelock

From Port Blair: Government ferries depart Haddo Jetty daily (2 ferries, 2.5–3 hrs, ₹320–550). Private speedboats (Makruzz/Nautika) operate on select days (1.5 hrs, ₹1,200). Book well ahead during December–January. From Havelock: Daily government ferry (45 min, ₹300) and private speedboat (30 min). Many visitors combine Neil Island as a day trip from Havelock — the ferry timings allow a 5-hour island visit.

Direct Answer

The Honest Internet Situation

Neil Island connectivity reality check:

  • BSNL 4G: 3-5 Mbps near jetty, drops to 1-2 Mbps at beaches
  • No WiFi cafés (unlike Havelock)
  • Power cuts: 3-4 hours daily (typically 11am-3pm)
  • One charging station at the jetty market area
  • Zoom calls: audio barely, video no
  • Best use: async work (email, writing, coding), not meetings
