Agatti IslandLakshadweep — Island Guide 2026

Agatti Island is the only entry point to Lakshadweep with an airport, making it the gateway to India's most extraordinary coral paradise. The island is just 6 km long and 2 km wide, ringed by a lagoon of water so clear you can spot reef fish from the beach without any equipment. Unlike the Maldives, Lakshadweep remains genuinely off-the-tourist-trail — access requires a government permit, accommodation is limited, and the islands are immaculately clean. The result is a snorkelling and diving experience that rivals the world's best.

Editor's Note

Walking into Agatti's lagoon at low tide — the water crystal clear to the coral 4 metres below, not another tourist in sight — is as close to the Maldives as India gets, at a fraction of the price.

Agatti Lagoon — Walk-In Snorkelling Without a Boat

Agatti's most remarkable feature is that the coral reef begins just metres from the western beach — wade in knee-deep and put on mask and fins to drift over a living coral garden. The clarity is exceptional (visibility 15–25 metres on calm days), and the diversity of marine life — parrotfish, surgeonfish, clownfish, rays — is extraordinary.

The lagoon's shallow eastern side is perfect for non-swimmers and children — acres of warm, waist-deep water over sand and seagrass, with bioluminescence visible after dark on calm nights.

💡
Pro Tips
🌊Individual entry permit for Lakshadweep (Indian nationals only) must be obtained from the Lakshadweep Administration through authorised tour operators — not possible to book independently at short notice.
🐚Fly to Agatti from Kochi (Cochin International Airport) — 1.5-hour flight, 4–6 flights per week. Book 2–3 months ahead (high demand in Dec–Jan).
🪸Bangaram Island (10-min speedboat from Agatti) has a luxury eco-resort with the best dive operation in the archipelago.

Island Hopping from Agatti

From Agatti, speedboats reach Bangaram (uninhabited, luxury resort only), Kavaratti (capital island, larger infrastructure), and Kalpeni (known for its vast lagoon and traditional Lakshadweep music performances). Day trips to Bangaram's pristine uninhabited shores are bookable through the Bangaram Island Resort (Taj-operated). Kalpeni's oval lagoon is considered the most scenic in all of Lakshadweep.
