Diu BeachGujarat β€” Beach Guide 2026

Diu is a tiny island territory off the coast of Gujarat that punches astronomically above its weight as a beach destination. A former Portuguese colony (ruled from 1535 to 1961 β€” 29 years longer than Goa), Diu retains vivid Portuguese architectural DNA: whitewashed churches with baroque facades, a massive sea fortress rising from volcanic rock, and narrow cobblestoned lanes lined with colonial townhouses painted in pastel blues and yellows. Unlike mainland Gujarat (a dry state), Diu permits alcohol β€” making it an oasis for Gujarat residents seeking both beach and beverages.
⚑

TL;DR β€” QUICK SUMMARY

A remarkable coastal enclave combining pristine, swimmable beaches with immense 16th-century Portuguese stone fortresses and a distinctly relaxed, alcohol-friendly atmosphere.

Diu is Goa without the crowds. Portuguese architecture, clean beaches, legal alcohol (unlike the rest of Gujarat), and genuine peace.

Best Beaches: Nagoa & Ghogla

Nagoa Beach is Diu's crown jewel β€” a perfect horseshoe-shaped bay of golden sand surrounded by hoka (palm) trees, with calm, clean water ideal for swimming. The beach is less than 2 km long but its sheltered shape creates some of the safest swimming conditions on the Gujarat coast. DTDC resort sits at its southern end with direct beach access.

Ghogla Beach, on the mainland side of the bridge connecting Diu to Gujarat, is wider and less developed β€” a popular spot for evening walks and local families. Gomatimata Beach (west coast) is the most secluded, accessible via a narrow road through salt pans. Jallandhar Beach, close to the fort, is rocky but offers dramatic sunset views with fishing boats silhouetted against the horizon.

Pro Tips
🌊Nagoa Beach is best before 11am β€” it gets crowded with day-trippers from Veraval/Una by noon.
🐚Rent a bicycle or Luna (moped) from Diu town (β‚Ή200/day) β€” the island is tiny (40 sq km) and cycling is the best way to explore.
πŸͺΈThe beach parasailing at Nagoa is run by government operators β€” safe and reasonably priced (β‚Ή400/ride).

Diu Fort Sea Fortress

Diu Fort is a mammoth Portuguese sea fortress built in 1535 CE, standing on the eastern tip of the island where the Arabian Sea crashes against volcanic rock from three sides. The fort was the site of historic battles between the Portuguese and Ottoman Empire, and its walls stretch over 1 km with a lighthouse, a chapel, and dozens of rusting cannons still pointing seaward.

Entry is free and the fort is open sunrise to sunset. Walk the complete rampart circuit (45 minutes) for 360Β° views of the harbour, the open sea, and the Diu town skyline. The sunset from the northernmost bastion is widely considered the best view on the island.

How to Reach Diu
