The Dhow Shipyard
Mandvi's working dhow shipyard is one of the last remaining traditional wooden shipbuilding operations in the world. Massive wooden trading vessels β some 200 tonnes or more β are built entirely by hand over 2-3 years using techniques unchanged since the 17th century. The shipyard sits right on the beach, and visitors can walk freely among the towering wooden frames, watching carpenters work with hand tools that predate power machinery.
These boats are still actively used for cargo trade to ports in the Persian Gulf, East Africa, and Southeast Asia. The shipyard is free to visit during working hours (8amβ5pm). A tip of βΉ50β100 to the lead carpenter is customary and appreciated.
Vijay Vilas Palace
The Vijay Vilas Palace (built 1929) is a stunning Rajput-style palace set in 450 acres of grounds just 6 km west of Mandvi beach. Built by Rao Vijayaraji, the Maharao of Kutch, as a summer retreat, it features red sandstone domes, stained glass windows, carved marble balconies, and a private beach accessible through palace grounds. Entry is βΉ30 for Indians, βΉ100 for foreign nationals.
The palace was featured in the Bollywood film "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" (1999) and its pristine private beach β Mandvi's cleanest β is accessible with the palace entry ticket. The drive from Mandvi through the arid Kutch landscape to the palace is itself scenic, with windmills dotting the horizon.

Why Mandvi Beach is a Must-Visit
Mandvi Beach in the Kutch district is Gujarat's most treasured coastal gem β a wide, windswept shore where working wooden dhow boats are still hand-crafted by local artisans. The 400-year-old Vijay Vilas Palace looms majestically over the dunes just 3 km away, and camel rides along the beach are a beloved local tradition.
